I spent last weekend on a 48-hour getaway with a girlfriend. As I boarded the plane to head home to the United Kingdom, I was reflecting on just how grateful I was for the opportunity. I thought about how happy I felt and how excited I was to get back home and start the work week. That’s right. I wasn’t having end-of-the-trip or Sunday evening blues. I was looking forward to Monday morning with anticipation. Why? Because I was full. I had spent the weekend taking care of me, doing things I love, spending time with someone who encourages, inspires, and challenges me positively. So as a result, I was excited and ready to pour into the lives of others.

By the time the flight attendants start their regular safety routine, I am usually a chapter deep in a book or have my headphones in listening to a podcast. This time though, I was still sitting in silent reflection. Then, the flight attendant said, “Put your own oxygen mask on first.” It occurred to me that I had done that this weekend. I had taken care of myself first and, because of that, I was reinvigorated and excited to get home and help others.

This post is for parents, educators and anyone who is always giving of him or herself. It can be depleting. When was the last time you took a little time for yourself, to recharge your battery? I know that 48 hours away was a great luxury and that many of you don’t have that room in your immediate calendar; however, how about 48 minutes? How about 48 minutes to listen to an amazing and encouraging podcast? Or 48 minutes for a massage, a pedicure, or to read a book? For extraverts, 48 minutes for lunch with a friend who encourages you and challenges you can do the same!

One of the things I did this weekend was walked the tulip fields in The Netherlands. I’ve wanted to do this for some time now, and I’m so glad I got to experience it. It was a reminder of growth and vibrant life. I believe experiencing growth and living a vibrant life take one being intentional about making time for themselves. When I set aside time for me, whether it be a weekend or an hour, my outlook is always different at the end of that time. Where in your week can you carve out an hour for you? Hard schedule it, otherwise, it won’t happen. Then, don’t break that promise to yourself! You deserve it.
